I understand that the conductor is responsible for interpreting a piece of music and shaping how the orchestra will perform it. Still, I find myself wondering if he has much practical value DURING the performance at all. It seems that everything would have been decided, implemented and perfected during rehearsal, and that all that is left for him to do is making sure that everyone starts in unison.
