Now that the £ is nearly at par with the €, I have been browsing online book sellers to get my reading fix in English.
Anybody reading anything good these days that they would like to recommend? I like travel (Thubron, Kapuscinski,Newby, some Theroux), history (contemporary, but not USA), detective stories (not James Ellroy or gruesome stuff like that).

New years day pick was this Meryl Streep pick. Saw it with a friend who was absolutely convinced the writer intended Hofman's character be seen as a pedophile. Well, it seemed to me the entire point of the play & screen play was to show how dimensional doubt could be. Can anyone chime in on this?

I must say that I enjoyed it although it felt a bit long & I'm unsure what I think of Cate's acting abilities & found the constant flick back to the hospital too distracting. However it's perfect fluff for when you fancy something a bit less brainy which is ideal this time of the year :-)
I was just remembering when I was a kid we used to frequent Hawaii. One of our favorites was the Royal Hawaiian . My father ran into the King of Bahrain , where they exchanged gifts, I think my father gave him a print of the RH that my mother had painted, and the King reciprocated by giving him two gold (colored?) watches.
