I'm editing out my own misinformation regarding the Butthole Surfers show last night and replacing it with the article " Butthole Surfers concert at Webster Hall ends in near riot". Looks like the pelting of Gibby that I saw was a mere matter of collateral damage.

By the way, the first opening band was the School of Rock All-Stars. Wow. I had no idea what to expect from these young kids, but the audience got some pretty heartfelt renditions of 21st Century Schizoid Man, Zomby Woof, Uncontrollable Urge, Barracuda and several others. Pretty good stuff, and later they got onstage to play with the Butthole Surfers too.

I gave up the chance to see Butthole Surfers in order to see the legendary Chuck Berry the same night. Heard mixed reports from the Dublin gig.

Well, the NYC show was excellent until it ended abruptly. The front of the crowd was in full lather, and by the third or fourth tune I felt as though I'd jumped into a lake fully clothed.

So how was Chuck Berry? I've never seen him.

He was... legendary and awful at the same time. Great to see him in the flesh, everyone went mental for him. Yet he hardly sang, preferring to shout out the odd word while the crowd sang along, and his guitar playing was woeful. Many many bum notes. He is 81 though, so he's easy to forgive!

Yeah, I guess 81 can do that to you, though from what I hear BB King still puts on a pretty good show. I saw Dizzy Gillespie in the early 1990s and he was still insanely good.

The NYC venue for Butthole Surfers was Webster Hall, down on 11th St. I had not seen a show there since 1982 or '83, when the place was called the Ritz. I saw the Stranglers and the Suburbs there around that time.
