Under the Banner of Heaven (aka the Mormon book) was excellent too. I'm too lazy to check to see if he's working on anything new - hope so...

I liked the mormon book but thought the Alaska book was weak. The author tried to hype the kid up, imo. He was just a dumbass who screwed up and paid the price for it. The road where he died isn't really remote either.

Krakauer's book, Into Thin Air stuck with me after reading it. Hell, it still does.

Am I right in recalling his epilogue that showed 30-some% of the climbers who attempt Everest die?

Didn't you just read the book?
If so, why would you have any expectation of him having anything so practical as a map?

If he had a helicopter, he could have flown out.
If he'd had a satellite phone, ........

You asked if he sealed his fate when he crossed the river at the time he did. I offered an answer.......one that agreed with you and added some insight that I remember from the book........relax mate....
