And by "bass", you mean "bass guitar" only?

Not necessarily only American. And yes, I mean bass guitar in rock.
Kraftwerk - they could produce any sound without using proper instruments, so that's a different category - isn't it.

White Stripes - yes. Although that's more like a duo, than a band.

Jack White's genius muscial talent makes up for the lack of bass player. The same can be said for Ray Manzerek.
