My favourites were Grimble and The Phantom Tollbooth...

#3 -- I was reminiscing with a friend about that Ursula Andress pictorial just last week. I read it pretty thoroughly myself. It was photographed by John Derek, who was successively married to Andress, Bo Derek, and Linda Evans.

I loved the Enid Blyton novels... they always seemed to have houses with secret passageways in them, which led to a period of several months where I went around obsessively tapping on walls, convinced I would find a secret passageway or revolving bookcase somewhere.

Did anyone else read the Sue Barton, Student Nurse series? Or Betsy, Tacy, and Tib? Those were some of my favorites. For some reason, I never really got excited about the Little House on the Prairie books, possibly because I expected them to be like the TV series and they weren't.

I also liked the "Shoes" series... Dancing Shoes, Skating Shoes, Theater Shoes, etc., about girls who were gifted in those areas.

Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. I was obsessed with this book as a child. It might be a bit young for an eight-year-old though?
There was also another one of those child-detective series - Trixie Beldon I think her name was? I loved those as well as the Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys books.

#13 -- Are you thinking of Judy Bolton? I liked her better than Nancy Drew. Nancy Drew was always pretty much the same age; Judy Bolton matured over the series which seemed more realistic.

I remember Trixie Belden, too! Haven't thought of those in years.

She is the best kid book writer ever & I think it's a shame so many kids outside Scandi don't ever get introduced to it.

This topic was x-posted with OT, with one more line "What childhood books turned you into a reader???", to which I replied:
-
I think, it was when I borrowed the first book from the school library and did it all by myself (otherwise books were suggested to the pupils by their teachers). I was probably 8 years old. The book was "The Children of Noisy Village" by the Swedish writer Astrid Lindgren. One of my favourite children books ever.
That was in Poland in early 60's, where most of her books were very popular among children.

Thinking about different books (in addition to pick a path) i loved RL Stine as a kid of around 8 years old. Earlier than that i adored, and still do, the Hairy Maclary series of books by a New Zealand author, Lynley Dodd. I didnt realise that the first Hairy Maclary book was in 1983 so i was just a wee nipper when i read them. I will still read the books when i get a chance. I love Slinky Malinki

Slinky Malinki is an adventurous cat, cheeky and cheerful, friendly and fun. But at night he becomes a thief.

Hi OP, all the books you mentioned are still read in my home by my girls. Another authoress who they have many books by through my purchasing is Elsie Dinsmore [sp]. They have quite a stock pile of books in their room probably in the area of a thousand volumes. I'm currently reading Rascal which is great and our third time visited.
