A guidebook. Everytime.

This might have been done before, but what book(s) do you bring with you when you go travelling?
Cheers.

um, they're different books every time I travel. Although when travelling, I don't tend to read alot, except in transit.
Last time I travelled (overseas) to South Am I had with me:
Kapuściński - I can't embrace the World
Carlos Ruiz Zafón - The shadow of the wind
Both very good read.
Hopefully historic or historic fiction. <- about the area, where I'll be going.
Puts meat on the bones, of both.
I buy my books at antique malls. US$1.30
They're keepers, or they wouldn't have resale value.

Louis LaMore wrote many books on American pioneir days.
But he wrote great swashbucklers too. He was a merchant mariner for many years. And assey miner, prize fighter, and other off-the-wall trades. Adventurer. World traveller. He was a research freak like James A. Michiner.
His autobiography is called "Education of a Wandering Man". About his love for important books. Made him many friends around the world.
Wonderful book of his, about Moorish Spain in 1100s a.d. ; "Walking Drum". Its about the commercial caravans that wandered Europe to different big town markets. The walking drum was to keep pace.

If I am only going to be reading to kill time in transit, I like to pick up a few Louis L' amour books, which are easy to read and get into.
As gawkabout said the Walking Drum is a good one, as is the Sackett series, which is a series the spans the life of several generations of the Sackett family.
I bring something in a small enough format (trade paperback or smaller) and short enough not to be heavy, since I have to hold the books in my hands on most kinds of transport. I choose something light and entertaining that I can lose myself in, and I usually bring one or two books I have not read and one I have read, just in case I hate the others.
As to authors, I like Georgette Heyer, Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, and many mystery writers. Genres: obviously mysteries, also historical novels, humour and history.
