Watched this movie today and loved it. Interesting themes and character relationships. Beautifully shot.

Think I might have to go and read the book now.

I generally try to avoid anything to do with Sean Penn but I must admit that I enjoyed this movie (except for the sister's dialogue)

Yeah great film. Emilie Hersh surprised me, excellent acting. That "Big Hard Sun" song by Eddie Vedder is outstanding too, didn't expect to say that about his solo stuff.

I also loved the film: the scenery, the acting, the music... And I love the book!

Once you'll read it, you'll see that not everything was shown in the film. The book is not that ...one-dimensional. I found his personality in the book more complex and the story even more... unfortunate. But maybe that was just me.

Do read the book and let us know what you think about it!

I much preferred the book. The movie was very good but as #3 says the book was more rounded. The film was IMHO overly romantic about McCandless's motivations, but that's the director's right.

Yeah, that was the impression that I got from reading up about the book on the net. I read the original article that the book stemmed from, and even that was very interesting, and even more tragic, considering how close a safe river crossing was.

Just waiting on my Amazon delivery now...

The book is good, as most of Jon Krakeuers stuff is good.
The movie is generally an overly sentimental pile of tripe about a fool.
Most people who live in the North or know it well consider the young man an idiot, and the best thing that happened is that nobodys lives were jeopardized in any kind of 'rescue'.

I liked how the story develops... but thought his stay in that god-forsaken-place was stretched too long... he could have died a bit earlier(!!).... i liked the interaction between him and the old man he meets... kind of touching!!

I read the book when it first came and I thought the movie was a light-weight that managed to save itself at the end by cutting away to the self-portrait (an image that was in my mind through-out the movie that didn't correlate with what I seeing on screen). I ended up liking the movie because of that closing shot as I thought it wrung-out all the romanticism and the idea that this kid was doing something noble.

I much preferred the book as well although I thought emilie hersh did do a great job.
I wish I could/would be a pearl jam fan so I would have a bit of clout in saying eddie vedder ruined it for me without my personal opionion cropping up but really....way too much eddie where he didn't need to be I thought.

with that said, who sang "big hard sun" in the mid 80's?
