I'm heading off to Thailand in a few weeks, and I need something to read. Parameters: Long (I'm a fast reader and the book should last me a little), not too serious (Dostoyevsky is out), not too silly/too fluffy, not too chick-lit-ey, can be complex, can be Scifi or YA - I'd take a Potter or two if I hadn't read them all already. My last holiday reads: The Poisonwood Bible (yay), The Girl with the Pearl Earring (okay but a bit short), Never Let Me Go (yay in real life but very beach-incompatible), Stephen King's The Stand (yay).

So, any ideas?

Have you read "the Historian" by Elizabeth Kostova ? It's a vampire/travel novel, not too serious or too light, and certainly long enough (some would say too long, but I liked it).

Have a nice trip !

I highly recommend Cryptonomicon, by Neal Stephenson.

Heck, since you like the big tomes, go for the Baroque series (Quicksilver, The Confusion, The System of the World).
The trilogy improves as it goes along. Quicksilver took a little patience, but it's a small price to pay for the joyous romp of the next two books.

I can sum up all 4 books in 3 words: Enoch Root rocks.

I don't know what to tell you - I'm just reading The Longest Winter, WW2 book - took that to Florida just this last week - before that it was a book about Glenview Naval Airbase, and before that Jimmy Stewart - I recently bought Audie Murphy's book back in print - I seem to have a theme going lately

before that Maureen O'Hara's autobiography - to sum it up, she's a nice lady - she kept telling me that, it must be true :-)

Ida Lupino's was very enjoyable - oh, and I read the George Washington biography, can't remember the name of it

Shantaram. 1000+ pages! The last novel I stayed up all night repeatedly, because I didn't want to put it down.

Kafka on the Beach (Murakami) will take you very deep before it lets you go. It's a little lighter than Wind Up Bird Chronicles.

There's always White Oleander, which I read on a long long flight because I didn't have any options. Trashy though.

The Traveler by John Twelve Hawks
an absolute page-turner and the first of a series. The second book is out but I haven't read it yet.

"The time is roughly the present, and the U.S. is part of the Vast Machine, a society overseen by the Tabula, a secret organization bent on establishing a perfectly controlled populace. Allied against the Tabula are the Travelers and their sword-carrying protectors, the Harlequins. The Travelers, now almost extinct, can project their spirit into other worlds where they receive wisdom to bring back to earth" (from Amazon)

Since you're in Thailand, check out John Burdett's books (if you haven't already): "Bangkok 8," "Bangkok Tattoo" and "Bangkok Haunts." The stories, characters, tone, writing style, etc. will be completely different from anything you've read before. Burdett has a fascination with Thai/ Buddhist morality and values vs. those of the West, and he manages to be eloquent, incisive and thought-provoking instead of schlocky and exploitative.

Still, there's plenty of lurid stuff in these books to keep the ol' id entertained.

If you liked "The Stand" try "Lucifers Hammer" by Niven & Pournelle.
Have you read Kings "The Green Mile"?
