The Velvet Underground?
Captain Beefheart?

Please don't put Radiohead or some nonsense like that. I mean a band who have changed the face of music, created a "sound" and still stand the test of time.

Any others?

The Velvet Underground had half a good album. The Beatles win this hands down

Half a good album?..........................................

The beatles made the same record over and over. except for a couple of LSD diversions.

The Beatles made their mark considering they were out for about 7 years. Even without the early stuff, Help, Revolver, Sgt Pepper, The White Album, Let It Be, Abbey Road and Rubber Soul changed the face of music, never mind their singles. The albums are completely different if you ask me.
But if you read every interview with a musician written in the last 100 years, I reckon there would be a lot more mentioning the Beatles as an influence ahead of Captain Beefheart.

I listened to some Beefheart recently, and to me, it doesn't really stand the test of time.
It's okay, but doesn't really light me up anymore.

I would say:
The Kinks
The Who
Grateful Dead
Talking Heads
Nirvana
