I should never double check myself - is it cockney or cock like Buzzcocks what's the buzz, cock? - or both, and a play on the bird?

I had to giggle this last week, I was in Disney World and there's a place in the German village at Epcot - somethingkunst - what an uproar when Howard (Devoto) and Pete (Shelley) got back together and did an album a few years ago, Buzzkunst - anyway, I still giggle like a school girl at the name - to see it at Disney only added fuel to the fire

its cock sparrer, its a play on cockney sparrow you're right. Its just when people get lazy with language they'd say cock sparrer instead of the whole word. I guess it stuck

Buzzcocks is also a reference to the bird as well, or maybe they had something else a little more saucy in mind who knows

They claim it's about the saying "what's the buzz, 'Cock?" - cock meaning mate/friend

considering they're old farts and we all said what's the buzz back then - even JC Superstar - what's the buzz, tell me what's a'happening, what's the buzz, tell me what's a'happening - I don't disbelieve it - I also take it with a grain of salt knowing darn well they're potty mouthed birdies - could be a vibrator too, or in this day and age of liking hairless pets could mean a well shorn package - they do sing about international women with no body hair so it could stand to reason

haha you've really put alot of thought into their name! you're bound to be right with at least one your theories!

I've never heard the phrase, 'whats the buzz cock?' as a way to say hows it going mate?! must be a Northern thing! or must have slowly phased out by the time i was a teenager

Spent a lot of years gabbing about it on various music message boards :-)

Northern - they were some of the original Manchester punks - and it could be it's just a phrase of it's time too - their first show was '76
