Don't Americans know what a Philosopher is...?

I thought Harry Potter was for kids. Do most 12-year old Brit Brats know about alchemy, Isaac Newton and philosopher stones?
I'd be amazed if they did.

All I know is we better include the legendary lapis philosophorum into our 6th grade curriculums in this country or we will be the butt of jokes in hostels the world over...

Wasn't Crocodile Dundee originally released as Alligator Dundee in America?

They were going to launch it as Alligator Dundee, until they saw Paul Hogan disrobed.
I can't speak for other locales, but in Kentucky I think it was Lizard Dundee.

And that Kangaroo Jack flick. I think that was originally slotted for release as - Speedhump Jack but they thought it might offend international sensitivities.

I've heard that the Three Stooges is literally translated as "The Three Stupid Jews" in Arabic speaking countries. No idea if its true but I gotta admit it wouldn't surprise me...

I've only read Harry Potter in the original version, but I seem to recall have rezd that for Americans, they even changed the menu at Hogwarts to include pizza.

#17 -- Over a SiT a couple of weeks ago, nutrax provided comparisons between the British and US versions and there was nothing like that. Purely linguistic differences, and only where the original might be confusing or meaningless to an American. The US version still reads like British English to an American.

I heard an interview with the US editor and he said they never made any changes within dialogue.

I still think it was a bad idea. I liked the weirdness of British English when I was a kid. Winnie the Pooh saying "Bother!" etc.
