Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

I have a strange question for anyone who has traveled to PNG, Port Moresby area.. My father was there, in the jungle somewhere during WWII. Trying to see if anyone ran into any type of info/memorial/ruins of any American encampment from that period? I think he was primarily around Port Moresby, but the photos I have show him clearly in the bush. Thinking of going in end of November/December, how is the weather then?

Any idea what weather is like?
I've heard it's the end of rainy season.. but does that mean a shower at the end of the day, or does that mean rain all day?
Is there a difference between islands? (Samoa, Fiji?)

I'm looking for a carved PNG style crocodile tooth necklace like one I missed on an online auction. I've got pictures and am wondering if anyone has a contact in PNG that may have one for sale or know someone who does. I've heard that there is a family of carvers that may make them, but haven't had much luck in finding much contact info. Hello. Our friends sailing around the globe invited me&my wife for 3,5 weeks trip between islands of Triobriand and around. As it's once for a lifetime occasion we quickly made decision and bought (expensive..) tickets.
I've traveled a lot in Asia (also indonesian islands), South America, Europe and north Africa, but I've never considering going to PNG, as I'm not so enthusiastic about dense jungle far from civilisation with lot of malaria mosquitos, and read about poor safety records in this…

Return ticket from Wallis to Futuna as quoted for a trip in one month is 230 EUR.
I doubt this is how much locals are paying.

Anyone with knowledge of a cheaper way to buy such tickets?

We plan to spend some time in Madang in June and have read some cautions about the city. What are the particular security concerns? Are there shops, ATMs, supermarkets that are safe near Madang Lodge? Are there any new seaside locations offering accommodations at reasonable, mid-priced levels?
