When I'm out and travel, is the part of the trip also food on the destination.
What do you recommend to eat when you are in Papua New Guinea? And what do I have to stay away from? :)

Well, you won't exactly be spoilt for choice...
Mostly it is greasy fast food out there, or maybe limited Chinese and Aussie fare in the cities.

The traditional food cooked in earth oven often with coconut milk can be truly delicious, but is not readily available commercially.

My info & thoughts:
on East-Indonesia.info: Indonesia, Maluku, West Papua, Raja Ampat & Indonesian Visas
on Thorn Tree: Seeing Orangutans, Kalimantan, Kiribati & Tuvalu

The traditional Papua New Guinean diet is largely vegetarian. Pigs and chickens are typically only eaten on special occasions. In areas where communities live near rivers, fish, crab and crayfish form a substantial part of people's daily diet.

Taro, sago and yams are the three major staples of the Papua New Guinean diet and you will find it almost anywhere so definitely a "must try" although I wouldn't claim it is something super yummy.

As #1 pointed out a very traditional way of preparing food is in the earth oven so if you have an opportunity to experience that definitely worth doing. Some tour operators have that on offer but needless to say that it cannot compare with the real event in a traditional village.
