We have 5 days off in October and I'm considering going to Fiji. We definitely won't stay in a resort, we'd probably pick one homestay and spend the whole time there. It would have to be somewhere with a good beach and snorklling (diving would be great). My main concern is that we don't have enough time to- I don't want to spend half our holiday on planes/buses/boats. Any advice?

We'll be leaving from Sydney.

Hi,

I'm after exactly the same information. Only I'm going to be there for 4 days and not 5.

Any info would be much appreciated, thanks :)

I spent two weeks in Fiji (granted, this was back in 2003) and found no good snorkeling off the main island. I wasn't a diver at the time, so I can't comment to that. You will need time to get to another island. I stayed on Waya at the Octopus Resort, which did have good snorkeling (and I'm told good diving), but I don't think homestays are possible and the boat trip did eat up several hours in total.

Given your plan to dive, might it make more sense to stay at a resort that has its own dive outfit, so you can have more bottom time? You might look at doing an internal flight to save yourself time.

Given you are in Australia, why not catch one of those ridiculously cheap Pacific Flier flights to Palau, where you'll have amazing snorkeling and diving and can stay in the capital? You would have to fly out of Brisbane. (Note: if you decide to do this, check about the reliability of the flight leaving on time. Heard some stories from a Palaun about flights being canceled if they didn't sell enough tickets). You can also arrange homestays there.

two options for you Lawaki Beach House in the Beqa Lagoon or Danny's Village House on Coral Coast

http://www.fijihomestays.com/lawaki_beach_house_beqa_island_fiji.htm

http://www.fijihomestays.com/fiji_homestays_photos.htm

both very easy to get too. Lawaki would be better option for diving as it is in the Beqa Lagoon

hope this helps

Pacific Harbour on the coral coast have some fantastic dives off Bega Lagoon. They are known to have the best shark dive in the world.. Look up Aquatrek Dive Fiji.
It is about half hour to an hour boat ride. pick up and drop off is at the Pearl Resort Pacific Harbour.
There is the Uprising Resort that take back packers and it has a beautiful beach and may even arrange your diving for you. But if you you want a home stay, reply through private message and I'll give you details on my home stay.

Try Treasure Island resort.....depending on what time u arrive in Fiji...their first boat lives from Vuda marina as early as 0730hrs and is only 30mins by speedboat transfer.......check out www.allwaysfiji.com.....I hear they have good rates and include transfers as well. They also have stay 5 pay 4 promotional packages...its pretty good!!
