Hi there, can anyone who has just come back from the Oarsman vouch for it...

Have read so many really bad reviews lately I am a bit loath to book it, plus murmerings that it's gone down hill etc etc.

Am not expecting flash, but just want good service and reasonable quality food.

Thanks in advance, J

Hi, i was there in late July. It was fine. The management were typically wonderful Fijian and the other westerners were great, its not big so you soon meet every one over dinner. I think if it was not now what it once was it would be typical of how hard they are really doing it due to Swine Flu, GFC, and the Bainimarana coup there. The resort next door athat shares the beach with Oarsmans has now closed. I'd say go with an open mind as it really is a wonderful part of the world, it is Fiji remember and a few days chilling out you will just be happy to be there and just go with it. The meals were very basic, and the dorm showers were lousy but cest la vie. I had a great time. I hope you do too. Enjoy!

Im really surprised to hear that the place next door has shut. It really catered well for the overflow, had lovely gardens, nice huts and very friendly staff.

it wasnt until the manager Oni told me that it was a seperate resort now closed that I became aware it was not part of Oarsmans, i would have thought they would buy it up but with the economy as is it might be too much a reach. Also, I was told Oarsmans had the same original arcitect as very expensive Turtle Island which I thought was interesting.

"same original architect as very expensive Turtle Island which I thought was interesting. " - yes, that is correct. You see, Oarsman was built by the owner of Turtle and given to the Chief after some years of operation as a "thank you"
