Hey ya'all!

My boyfriend and I would like to take a trip to Fiji in September 2010 and I want to make it 100% unique. We will be coming from Guam, a tropical, touristy island. Therefore, I want to do stuff unique to Fiji that I can't do anywhere else. I am determined to NOT stay and be swept up in a tourist resort where all I see is the locals making money.

(OK, I might have to do just the shark dive and maybe skydive... but I have 4-5 days!)

So here I have it... what should I do? Airfare is too cheap to pass up, but I'm at a loss of how to make it an abnormal trip. I'm not above bringing my tent, but my boyfriend and I do like privacy so dorm rooms are not in our plans. Is there backpack camping on Fiji?

Thank you very much!
Maddie

Camping in Fiji is generally not practical. See this recent thread
There are double rooms at the backpacker style resorts, or you might find a homestay somewhere more remote both economical and unique.

Ask me about the Island Builders of the Pacific.

like Ozziegiraffe said above you cannot get a more unique than a stay in a homestay.

Consider Danny's Village Homestay - you say you want your own room - Danny's is not your normal homestay where you stay in your hosts house at Danny's you stay in your own cabin away from the main house.

All the money you pay goes to the locals

see pictures at this link

hope this helps

There is a Rucksack Club in Suva.
Maybe get in touch with them.

" tourist resort where all I see is the locals making money." -
wow are you misguided. In Fiji as with any third world country, the resorts are not owned by locals, and they certainly dont make "all the money".

Hi Maddie,

I think you'd love Vorovoro island. You become part of a Fijian community. It's definitely unique. Check out www.tribewanted.com

Mandja (4) Thankyou for your wise observation. The locals are not making all this money. Most of our hotels and resorts are owned by foreign investors. Minimum pay rate $2.50hr. If a local trys to make an extra dollar to put on his plate, good on him I say.
