i'm having a really hard time finding accommodation in byron bay. we're going to be in sydney for some business conference and will be carrying substantial (AND USELESS) luggage for.. business. i've been trying to find something that's midway between backpackers hostel (which, bunk beds, are not very feasible for us with the amount of crap we're carrying) and a hotel that's $150 and up. we're doing a road trip from sydney and up after the conference, and only able to stay at each place in between for a day or so. this means that apartments are out of the question too.
i stumbled upon Yamba, and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions? the accommodation seems a lot more affordable, but would i be missing out on byron bay?
thanks for your help!

If you have your own car, Byron Bay is only a short drive away from Yamba. Why not see both? I liked Yamba & did a daytrip there from Evans Head. Broken Head 15km south of Byron is another option.

Broken Head is about 5k's south of Byron. You cant really stay there unless you camp - perhaps you mean Lennox Head Chris?
Lennox Head is a good option for staying near Byron and if you ring a real estate agent you might get an apartment there for 2/3 days - unless it is easter holidays in which case you won't! Same with Byron.
In Byron there are a few places where you can pay up to $150 and get reasonable accommodation, again, excluding Easter and school hols. As you say, not many though. Have a look on wotif.
As for Yamba, its a nice place but it has a completely different vibe and atmosphere to Byron. Its more of a family holiday kind of place and there's not a lot of nightlife. As Chris suggests, no reason not to do both places but it depends on what you're looking for??

Someone else also suggested this place on here not long ago in Byron. No idea what its like but it looks good in the pics and is within your price range.

think i would like a bigger town vibe - markets, cafes, good dining. we're heading to fraser island and whitsundays, and i know we'll get a lot of "down time" there.
Ah! Broken Head! Please don't tell the bloody backpackers about it! Campground is right on an excellent beach and good cabins are available. There's about 8km of undeveloped coastline to the south (Nature Reserve) with some good walks. Byron Bay is about 8k to the north you can walk it if you're feeling fit and take a Blanch's bus home.
Suffolk Park (another good campground with cabins) is a pleasant stroll up the beach and has newsagent, pub, pizzas and small supermarket.
Yamba lacks the hedonistic excess of Byron and the beauty and tranquility of Broken Head, but maybe I'm prejudiced.
