Working holiday maker visa restrictions

Country forums / Australia, New Zealand & Antarctica

I'm new to this forum, so a big hello to everyone!

I am a Canadian looking to travel to Australia and would like to get a working holiday visa. I was wondering what the restrictions where for the types of jobs you can get. The only information I've been able to find so far says that you are "allowed to do any kind of work of a temporary or casual nature for no more than 3 months with any one employer".

By career I am a web/graphic designer and would rather take up this kind of work over doing farm or labour work. Would I be allowed to take on short term employment at a agency just do freelance projects? I ask because this kind of work doesn't seem very "casual" or typical for a backpacker.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

All of the above from spen.

There is a shortage of web/graphic designers, and you should be readily employable through one of the IT placement agencies. The current industry will be very similar to Canada I expect - heavy Microsoft emphasis. A lot of that work (as you know) is contract, and having a six month limit with one employer will rarely be an impediment. You should find work in the private sector in most cities (including some of our reigonal centres - Canberra, Gold Coast, Darwin, Cairns, etc). However if you wish to work for a government agency (federal, state or local) you may be more restricted. Although if you are engaged via a third party service provider on contract, it may not be an issue, since you won't actually be on a government agency payroll. Good luck.

Yes ... my comment about shortages related to Perth - where we had great difficulty finding skilled people for three months etc. Sydney and Melbourne are the centres for these activities, so other cities have to look harder to buy those skills locally.

Toilet Cleaner.

tsk tsk

Thats my speciality.

Maybe this is why I am so stoopid.

DC you have three choices ... your time starts now:

1. I am a toilet cleaner, therefore I am now stupid
2. I am stupid, therefore I am now a toilet cleaner
3. There is no connection, and I could just as easily be a brain surgeon, but I prefer to be a toilet cleaner.
