Cleaners in the mining industry earn crap money. $600 per week take home. I know Topic Caterers in Karratha are always looking for staff (Searipple camp) I was living there until 3 months ago. Most ppl work there a few months then move on.
Some are now working for the company I work for ( Civil Construction) and earn big bucks .

We hear a lot about the accommodation crisis and ppl in low end jobs finding it difficult to find / afford accomm. Anyone got anthing sensible to tell OP about that, so expectations can be set about what will happen vis a vis living costs? Or do companies provide accomm and it's non-mine personnel in other service areas finding difficulty?

All mines provide accommodation and meals, that includes catering and cleaning personnel.

#11, It's ordinary residents of the mining town who are being priced out, rather than the people who work directly for one of the mines who will have accom provided if they are FIFO. Although why you would want to live in a mining town unless you were earning loads of cash and had you accom provided for free is beyond me.

Hi....
FancyNancy...what is the web address of your company Civil Constructions? I tried to find it to look for a job there but to no avail.
Thanks.
By the way...I work as a cleaner in a remote mine site and my take home pay per fortnight is $1191. That's 10 hours a day/14 days straight.
I am trying to find out what the rate of pay for a trainee/inexperienced Dump Truck driver would be...anyone know??

I think there is a bit of misunderstanding with the whole idea of 'going up to the mines and making heaps of money'. Well it depends on what you mean by heaps of money really. My other half is a boilermaker and is on $32/ here in Perth, no fly out. He did look at the mines and the pay was $45-50 an hour, or in that vicinity. Not that much more when you consider the conditions. Also a lot of place dont pay you unless you are working, so you 'weeks off' arent paid and it works out the same as working here anyway.
As I said, it depends on what you mean by 'shit load of money'.

A lot of the pay increase comes from:
- working a standard 12 hour day (= 50% increase over an 8 hour day)
- the nature of remote mines, where food is provided and there isn't anything to spend money on
Working on an offshore oil platform would be preferable though; the pay is significantly higher than minng.

Just saw on Australian 60 minutes a story on the mines in WA.
They say they're desperately short of workers and the blue-collar workers are making way more than the white-collar ones. I've heard they're short of people like nurses as they're leaving to drive trucks which pays much better. The advice was to go there and just ask for a job, though only 2 people gave this information (1 got a job the 1st day, another a job the 2nd day). Also said they're willing to train anyone from any background.
Salaries stated were $160,000 for train drivers and $100,000+ for truck drivers.

Is it really that easy, tiemu? my husband and I currently run an Aboriginal community in remote WA, we are in our 6th year, and are a bit nervous of just quitting on the offchance. course we would be entry level job seekers. on tv they make it sound sooo easy! i have come across some conditions like - you have to be a local resident? FIFO perth would be ideal. this is a great site and only came across it accidentally when looking for mine site employment. great respondents.
