Using Aust electrical appliance in Japan

I have posted this on North East Asia forum as well.

We are going to Japan soon and my daughter has a thing about taking her hair straightener. She has researched adaptors for wall sockets, but doesn't know if she can use her 240volt hair straightener in Japan. She has asked me to seek your wisdom on VOLTAGE CONVERTERS. We will be staying in business hotels, do they perchance have converters for guests? (I doubt it). Where could we get one if such a thing would work?
It's a bulky thing to lug on the offchance she can use it. Has anyone here taken an electrical appliance to japan and not blown a fuse somewhere?
