I don't know with what kind of people you normaly deal with, but Iam a grown up adult, quite attached to my life and with quite some experience of traveling, so obviously Iam not gonna go in the desert without takig care of all these things that you mention and of much more.

direct towards the desert, from Sydney direction Dubbo (A32) then B83 to Boulia then to Alice Springs and back down to Adelaide on the 87. How is the road 12 between Alice Springs and Boulia?
I guess the red flag was this proposal in February-March, when it really can be punishingly hot.
People do the Birdsville Track, Oodnadatta Track, and the Plenty Highway Boulia to Alice Springs for the same reasons you are planning to - but generally June to September time, when it is hugely cooler - over 20 degrees C cooler.
The Plenty Highway looks like this, and as noted, its condition will depend mostly on when it was last graded, and what weather and traffic it has had.
