Been thinking about it? Well do it now as airfares have never been so cheap. Also I've just had a peek at - wotif and they're showing a wide range of accommodation options around the state that, contrary to the normal summer scheme of things, have been slashed to a third of the normal advertised peak season rack rate.

We have. But not til November.

Spen: I reckon Tassie is great with (a) kid - or kids. Even my little action hero enjoyed it. Sure if you can't convince them that there's stuff different to Wet And Wild, but:

Port Arthur has great ways of involving kids - right from the entrance where you each get given a card and follow "your convict" - kids get kids - thru their journey, to dress ups and other stuff.

Strahan - the play at the visitors centre, and the acting out the conditions at Sarahg Island ojn the tour are child-involving. One of yours might even get picked to be in the play as one of the audience participants.

Cradle Mountain - wildlife galore, and a variety of easy walks that you can drag even reluctant walkers on, if that's the case (just be sure to have the right clothes).

Hobart - Salamanca Markets (Saturdays, so factor that in) - especially sub-teen (?) girls like yours should find enough pretties and so on to be interested - a cut above the usual humdrummery of markets.

Westbury - a pretty good hedge maze - as good as anything I've seen in the UK.

TUhane Air walk we liked a lot, and they can see especially well the contrast between areas of native forest logging and those preserved (not the intention of the Forestry Commission, but that's what we noticed)

Taroona Shot Tower - get then to count the steps up and you get a prize.

The Tas Devil park at ?? - on the road to Port Arthur anyway - they have an evening tour thing where they feed the blighters - vicious nasty little beasts! And lots of nocturnal spottings. The boy loved that.

He was happier in Tasmania than at either Uluru Kata_Tjuta or southwest WA to be honest. Not a lot of accomm with swimming pools though! But we coped without (for once).

Driving distances are short...the longest is say Strahan to the east....but that is the only real haul over say 2.5 hours, usually less, depending where you stay.

Seeing as how we don't have any kids, spen, I really don't have the experience to post on what would push the buttons from their perspective and keep them interested.

ryb - sums it nicely however.

The Dismal Swamp inland from Stanley on the road to Marrawah would also keep the kids entertained.

Only in very limited numbers at the one time, Kate. I'm a bit shy with crowds.

Bloody hell, Drover - that link contains yet another spa retreat joint that pushes my buttons! Between Bicheno and St Helens. That would be a mere hop and a step from the Freycinet Peninsula, wouldn't it?

Spen - cos I know your kids love pools, don't forget the deliciously warm pool at Hastings Caves and Thermal Pool. The caves are wonderful. All on the way to Cockle Creek.
