I am a 62 year old guy who has tried to take as much time as I can every year to travel. I have never been to Australia, but am especially curious about Tasmania, because I don't know anyone who has ever visited the place. If some people who look at this post can provide me with some links where I can read about the place, I'd appreciate it.
I don't see much on the LP site to this end, and this way, I can get a preliminary idea of what the place is like, and what might interest me.

When I visit a new place, I don't have a "bucket list" of things to see. I like to get a feel for the place, interact with the people there, etc. Often times, that has involved learning bits and pieces of new languages, and eating weird foods, and to me, that's part of the experience. This would be one of the few trips I've taken where I can speak / communicate my native language (if I can understand New Yorkers most of the time, I should be okay with Australians).

I live in the greater Los Angeles area, so getting out of the big city environment would be a welcome change of pace. I'm fine with day hikes, running, maybe renting a bicycle and / or getting on a boat and seeing an island or two. What makes trips most memorable are the people I meet..

I'm open to spending a few days in Melbourne or Sydney at the end of the trip, as I think I have to go through both places to fly into / out of Hobart.. The Gold Coast and its tropical beaches aren't at the top of my priority list, as I'm a Portuguese speaker and have spent the better part of a year in the Northeast of Brasil.

Looking forward to hearing your responses!.

Tassie is a wonderful place for wildlife, walking and scenery. I spent three weeks there and it was nowhere near enough. You really need a car to get around.

beyond that, I'm sure google will help. Or one of the other travel guides in book form.

As a US citizen you might be interested in the massacre at Port Arthur, Tasmania which in turn, sparked our politicians in bringing in gun control (in just 3.5 months). The US can learn a lot from this!

OK..off my soap box now.

Port Arthur is definitely worth a visit, lovely spot and all the history. Be aware that the massacre is still well within memory.

Well i still can't understand from an Australian viewpoint, that the murder of so many children at Newtown Mass, is viewed by many in the US as a call to own assult weapons?

I just do not understand.
