ok
can i apply for a student visa after i have already used up my 1st year working holiday visa? didn't meet the requirements for the 2nd year visa.
I saw that you can legally work for 20 hours a week.
I actually want to go to school but living costs are expensive so it would be nice to have a little cash
thanks!

Earn a little cash?

Do you know how much it can cost to study in Aust, per year?

You have to pay a uni about Aud$17,000 for some courses, and in return, you work just 20 hours.

God Almighty!

Yes, you can work 20 hours a week, thats 40 a fortnight, but you will lose more than you make.

If you really want to study in Aust/NZ as an o/seas student, don't do it for the main reason for work, because you will not make it financially viable.

If you just want to stay longer in Aust, and have deep pockets or have rich parents or relos, then, yes, you can use the students visa as a substitute 2nd WHV.

The Aust Govt won't worry about you getting the Students Visa, after the WHV, just presuppoing a uni or TAFE or private college will accept you.

Not only do you have to pay the uni or TAFE or prvate college, and the visa fee for the SV, you have to also pay for living expenses.

Say, if you work 40 hours a f/n, at $18 per hour, $720 a fortnight, lower tax as an overseas student (ie, not WHV rate), but still, thats $1440 a month income. Or $17,280 a year, but if you have to pay about that for a fee charge to study here in Aust, what gain have you made? $280?

Yes, some courses are cheaper than others.

Another thing, is that an institution of learning must accept you, before you are granted a SV.

Find out the cost of the SV, the cost of the uni or TAFE or private college, and do he maths.

I think DC is on the money (so to speak). And [here is the link for information on applying|http://www.immi.gov.au/students/students/chooser/].

I was watching a border control/patrol last night and a 'student' was denied entry for this. They didn't think they genuinely wanted to study. So even if it's genuine it didn't look genuine. Same episode also had a chinese lady who sat down for 4 hours rather than pay her $200 fine.

Ooooh daycat - there's a British show on border security as well. Have you seen that one? Most of them are around the London airports but they do go to other ones as well.

I think that I might have seen the UK version, but the Aust version has more grunt.

However, to sum up, it seems that up first, they are very strict, but in the end, its always the punters that make it into the country.,

That Italian guy for eg, he got in. The Chinese couple, only got popped $220. Some of the "visitors" on the show, the words that come up, about the case, in the end, even though a bar of three years was mentioned, the person was let in on appeal.

Except when drugs are involved, they always imprison them, which is good.

But the immi side, (non drugs), I think that the words "not allowed entry to
Aust for 3 years" is more a scare tactic. For some people.

For others, the 3 year bar might be real.

I think who ever said that, Border Security is BS is quite true. Because when we see the name of the "visitor" up first, the is no mention of their name. But that narration by Grant Bowler, or the words that come up, has the name of the "visitor".

The "visitor" must have agreed some where or somehow to be on the show.

There is something "fishy" about the show.

But its a good time waster though.

I am sure the cases of immi breaches or customs breaches or AQIS breaches, that do not make it onto Border Security, must be more interesting than the ones that do make it onto the show.

However, I do envy the girls and boys in blue on the show. So much power! If I had the smarts, ie, the brains, when the ad comes open again, I would go for it.

But I am a coward, I have read the personnel discription, of what they are looking for. Too hard for me to match them requirements.

I think though, that the Aust Govt will approve an application from a person, for a SV, who has had a WHV in the past. Why, because the Aust Govt is interested in the $$$$$$$$$$$ to be made. The uni/TAFE/private college will also approve, for the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ to be made.

But C&BP can still stop a person at the border, why? Because they are supposed to be impartial. As is DIAC. Which is a good thing, being impartial.

So, to the gist of the OP's post. Yes, you can apply for the SV, if the uni/TAFE/private college will accept you, you will get the visa. But as to if you will be stopped at the airport on arrival, only DIAC & C&BP know the answer. They can and do stop a certain % of people coming into Aust. If the person coming in acts odd/strange/there is suspicion of drugs, or something else.

Ian's link might have the info on costs of study, but you can too, OP, if you want to, check and see how much it will cost to apply for the SV (DIAC website), and how much the institution of learning will charge. Then there is the cost of living, housing, food, transport.......

The 40 hours of work a fortnight, might only cover housing & food & transport, but you will find it quite $$$ to pay the uni fees as well.

Another point, if you don't pass your course, ie, if you put too much emphasis on work, and not attend lecture/tutorial, your uni/TAFE/private college can report you to DIAC who will cancel your SV.

Make sure you have checked all bases, and are prepared to study.

Don't use the SV just to try to earn money. Not worth it.

That hereby ends the Daycat lecture/tutorial on this thread.

Thank you.

Bradford College, in Adelaide, which is a pre u college linked to the Uni of Adelaide, foundation studies, is $35,000 odd.

Can you imagine that.

Can you afford something like that??? I know I certainly couldn't. Lucky my parents, and my close relatives, were accepted as migrants many years ago.

If you were to start a uni course, it might be $17,000 more or less.

Sorry, I did say I was going to shut up on this topic.

But this one is the last one, ........... PROMISE.
