So I'm traveling to Australia on a 1 year WHV, just a few weeks away and I'm beginning to panic a bit about things that I really should have figured out ages ago. Now keep in mind, I've read ad nauseum on the subject of both of these, have emailed immigration and passport offices, but never seem to get a clear cut, definitive answer, so here goes:

1 - I am traveling without a return ticket. I've been told I need a return ticket and/OR (emphasis on OR) proof that I have sufficient funds for a return ticket. From what I've read and from what I've heard from other travelers (especially a backpacker as old as me) it's really not something they check and if you DO have sufficient funds, it isn't a problem at all.

2 - My Canadian passport is due to expire in October while I am in Australia (I depart on my trip starting June 15). Originally I thought, no problem, I'll just get a new passport while I'm there. It dawned on me though, it could be an issue say, just getting into the country with a passport that is going to expire while I'm there! It's a bit of a hassle to get the new passport AND change the WHV information at this point, so if I don't have to I'd rather not.

Anyone with experience with either of these, I'd very happily take some advice!

Cheers!

Sorry i can't be any help but it seams strange they would even issue you with the WHV is youf passport didn't have enough validity to cover the visa...

You'll find its a bit like travel booking sites selling tickets for 2 flights with a narrow transfer time. Its only their business to sell tickets, yours to make sure there's enough time between flights. The passport situation is your responsibility, not theirs when you apply for a visa.

Nr. 2 seems like a big problem to me. have you checked if you can even get a new passport while there and if they can transfer the WHV?

I would really call the embassy on this.

I have just entered oz on a one way ticket (also have whv) Not a problem. But i am not sure they would be so keen on the fact your passport expires so soon.
Its very easy to transfer your whv onto a new passport, you just email them your new details and they update it. I should know, i changed my passport twice before entering australia!

There is absolutely no problem about the one way ticket. It's accepted that it's hard to book a return ticket a year (or possibly more) out. The requirement is only that you have a ticket, or the funds to buy one.

Passport though could be tricky. Coming here with a passport that expires while you are here is never a good look. That said, many people here do renew passports, and you don't need another visa - just keep the old passport.

However, I'd be still replacing the passport before you come.

It's usually a lot cheaper and quicker to renew yr passport when at home - have you still got time?

the visa will still be good

Usually you need at least 6 months validity on passport to enter.

Thanks for the info guys! Will be hitting the passport office today to see what I can do. I have a little over 2 weeks, so hopefully I can get an express passport and the WHV info changed to reflect that in time!

Very stupid of me I know, but I swear I heard about people getting new passports after an old one had expired while traveling before!

#3- No reason not to be able to renew a passport while in Australia except for maybe the cost. There are Canadian Embassies and Consulates there you know!!
