Hi,

I’m looking to commence a WHV in March 2019, my passport is due to expire in June 2020. Would I need to renew before I went so as to have 6 months left when I depart Aus or would it be possible to renew when I’m over there? I will potentially look to do farm work and stay for two years too.

I’m from the UK.

Whether you can renew your passport while overseas (online, by mail, or at a British High Commission in Australia) is a question to ask your own government departments.

If you cannot renew from here, then you should renew the passport before you leave home - if for no other reason than to allow the Second WHV year.

You might decide to do 23 months in New Zealand afterwards as well.

Far less hassle to renew before you leave. Up to 9 months validity of your old passport will be credited to your new passport so you don't lose any time.

Every group has its own dynamics, if you can't see the idiot then it's probably you.
Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think :-D

I have mostly renewed my passports (UK and Australian) from outside the country of where these passports are from (in Ireland and UK for my Australian, and Australia and Ireland for my UK) but it would certainly be smarter to renew before you left. The other thing is your WHV would then be in your new passport as opposed to juggling between the two with different passport numbers.

You can certainly renew your UK passport in Australia but all the processing is done in the UK so you will pay more and it will take longer than if you apply while you are still in the UK. With the 9 months of unexpired validity on your old passport that will be credited to you new passport you will only lose about a year of validity on your old passport.
