Hello I'll be flying into Wellington. I was wondering if it's best to do the North Island before the South Island since I believe the North Island will get even more humid as January approaches.
I don't think you need to worry about humidity. As for bus passes, have a look at Intercity, Naked Bus, Stray and compare their passes. Which one goes where you want in your time frame? | 1
The HI/YHA hostels tend to be quieter in most locations throughout NZ - no specific knowledge of Wellington however. And I wouldn't concern myself too much with excessive heat or humidity - even in January. For the North Island I would probably limit myself to a quick trip Ruapehu > Taupo > Rotorua > Coromandel > Auckland, and then perhaps fly to Christchurch. However if you wish to fully 'circumnavigate' the South Island (at least from Queenstown / Christchurch and north), then I would commit basically all of my three weeks to the South Island. You are there at peak season - you will need to plan your trip well, and pre-book accommodation (even dorm beds) for every night. Does Subway fit into your criteria as a provider of healthy lunch service? | 2
