Hi everyone, I'm looking at taking my laptop in to Australia on a working holiday visa.

The value is greater than the $900 limit - has anyone got any experience declaring a laptop upon entry to Australia?

What was the process like?

Many thanks.

The A$900 limit applies to brand new items purchased abroad not your personal effects so do not declare the laptop:

Personal goods are free from duty and tax if they are:
owned and used by you overseas for 12 months or more
imported temporarily (a security may be required by the Department).

Are you sure about this? I'd rather not declare anything I don't have to.

Yes that is correct unless it is boxed and untouched no need to declare it.

Many thanks - I can take copies of the required receipts just incase I am challenged.

If it is clearly used nobody is going to care, you do not need the receipts.

Thanks, I've actually taken a laptop and DSLR into Australia before. It was so long ago that I honestly cannot remember what I did.

We're often there on holiday and definitely take items valued at over $900 - wedding and engagement rings, two iPhones, a DSLR, an iPad..... never occurred to us to declare them since they are personal belongings...

Don't worry!
