Do Royal Bank of Scotland {British} debit cards with four digit PINs work in Australian ATMs and can anyone recommend good poke-around second hand bookshops in Adelaide and Sydney? Thanks very much.

O'Connell Book in Station Arcade in the city is a 2nd hand book shop.
There are not really a lot of them around, 2nd book shops.
Have lived in Adelaide for the past 30 odd years, and can tell you that there are not too many 2nd book shops around, even in the 1980s/1990s.
Used to have another one in Hindley St, but I believe that had closed a while back.
You can google and see what comes up.
I know someone who has used several ATMs in Adelaide, with an overseas card, Visa or Mastercard debit.
More importantly is that you tell your home bank that you are going overseas with that card.
My Aust issued bank cards all still have 4 digit PINs to them.
I haven't lived in either city for a lot of years - but try Elizabeth's in Newtown, Sydney.
Lots of buses from the centre go down King Street - in addition, you can stroll the University of Sydney just before Newtown. Nice sprawling campus - plus King Street Newtown is itself a funky shopping strip too.
Adelaide is an artsy town - you shouldn't have any trouble. Search North Adelaide as well.
