car hire

We will be in auckland at the end of november and we want to buy a used car for our three month stay in NZ.
I would appreciate any comment on where to go or how to approach the purchase of a vehicle. How about the insurance question.
I have done the same in OZ in it was easy.

Trademe is a great source of used cars - this is a pointer to a search I have running for myself. There is even a bit of a guide to buying a used car on the site and a link through to general information about insurance. In NZ, all personal injury related insurance is paid for as part of your registration fee. As for insuring the car itself and liability to third parties, we have a bunch of insurers. I use AMI. Other popular insurers are State and the AA (you get cheap vehicle breakdown and recovery service with either).
