Campfires. Yeah great aren't they? Wet wood that tosses up a smokescreen the equivalent of a magnesium flare. Freezing your nuts off (if you're that way anatomically inclined) when the flames die out at exactly 3.27 am to the minute every morning. Arguing with fellow frozen stiffs as to who is going to forsake the remnant warmth of their sleeping bag to forage about for more wood. The possibility of rain and being forced to share the back seat of a car till the eternity that is dawn. Excellent.

Ahhh. Campfires, port and sleeping two to a sleeping bag. God, it seems like a lifetime ago. Memories of the Flinders Ranges in the 1970's.
Campfires are a bit un-PC in most places now though.
Haven't been to Middle Lagoon Kate but Cape Leveque is one of my favourite places.
Another terrific spot is Cullyamurra Waterhole on Cooper Creek. I guess you could do a day trip there from the Sheraton Innaminka if you didn't want to camp but you wouldn't experience the Corellas at sunrise and you wouldn't be able to wander off from your campsite at sunset with a cold beer in your hand, to contemplate "Life, the Universe and all that'.
I'll stop now. I'm getting misty eyed too.
Apparently they have self contained cabins now. It will spoil the place :P
Oh, and Cape Leveque has luxury tents ( wooden floor, ensuite and I think electricity)
Canapes and port and chocolate fondue delivered to your suite each night?
My idea of enjoying the Great Outdoors and this

If there's one thing worse than a well toasted amateur doing a Judith Durham impersonation around a campfire then it's a well toasted religiously bent amateur undergoing a nocturnal musical epiphany with a closer to god rendition of...
