I cannot believe how much people are expecting to sell their campervans and to a lesser extent cars in NZ. It is the end of the season and nobody wants to freeze their butt off in a camper van...

Why do folk still ask for ridiculous amounts for some old banger? They end up just getting lumbered!

At times I shudder when I see another ad on Thorntree that goes something along these lines “1987 Toyota Corona 1800, 175,000km, runs like a dream, paid $3000, willing to accept $2,500 for quick sale” or something similar.

People overpay for the campervans/cars. They have bought them from typical backpacker car sale yards and that is where the cycle begins. They may overpay and do not want to lose any money on the resale. Normal behaviour except that it is not always a realistic goal if you need to sell a car quickly. Also, a lot of people buy it from one location and drop it off in another. This can mean that a lot of cars end up in the one area where people depart, not arrive, from.

This is especially the case when referring to campervans. At least old crappy cars can be sold (albeit possibly at a loss) to students, backpackers etc. It is harder to sell a campervan.
