Best approach to 10 days in Tasmania

Country forums / Australia, New Zealand & Antarctica / Australia

As a couple in our mid 60s, we are wondering if we can do justice to touring Tasmania by spending 5 nights each in Hobart and Launceston, with a rental car as our means of exploring the island. Our Tasmania experience will follow a 32 day self drive of New Zealand so we are hesitant to repeat that kind of ambitious touring. However, we will consider it, if deemed necessary. My husband has knee problems so we must keep physical activity to a moderate level. We welcome opinions on this dilemma and any suggestions for the most practical approach to our 10 days in March 2018.

Hi - not sure what your question is? Are you asking if 5 days each in Hobart and Launceston is long enough for each city? Do you intend to travel around Tassie ie visit other places or just stay in Hobart and Launceston and maybe do some day trips?

Hobart and Launceston are both reasonable cities with Hobart having an interesting old waterfront and I suppose it is really what are you after that will satisfy you in keeping with your husband's limitations.
There are for instance quite a range of Shorter Walks - http://www.parks.tas.gov.au/index.aspx?base=1315 and you would want to examine them in detail to weed out any that might not be handled too well, plot the others on a map - www.travelmate.com.au a reasonable planner to assess just how much driving is necessary.
March should be fine for weather but being more southerly, southern changes can come in rather quick with blustery colder weather, especially to Hobart.

I just did 7 days in Tas - two in Hobart, four outside of Hobart in the Huon Valley, and one in Lauceston - with my 73 year old friend. The experiences we treasured most were all walks. The Tahune Airwalk within two hours of Hobart was lovely. Hartz Peak a few hours southwest of Hobart has some excellent, accessible walks. We caught the end of the harvest season in April - you'll have it even better in March.

You can (should!) drive to the top of Mt. Wellington in Hobart and walk around at the top. We also loved the MONA museum there.

In Launceston, we wished we'd had a bit more time. Sounds like you will!

Good luck with your trip!

Hi. You will have a good time in Tasmania by going to those two places, but you won't be doing Tasmania justice since the place is quite big and there is so much more to see if you go off the beaten path. You mentioned that you plan to rent a car, which will allow you to visit many areas.
I've written a small guide that shows some of the places that you should visit whilst in Tasmania.
10 places you must visit in Tasmania
You will be able to see quite a few of these landmarks if you use Hobart as a base, however you will need to try to base yourself in other areas if you want to see more of the island.
I hope that this helps.
