4 weeks in NZ

4 weeks in New Zealand arriving on Thursday 22nd November, landing in Auckland. Flight out of Christchurch on Dec 19th. We have 2 nights booked at a hostel there, and then we dont know. We keep being told to spend more time in the South Island, so were thinking perhaps 10 days North, 20 days South?

Also what are the best bits, we have a 25 things to do in NZ book which has helped a bit and we would like to go to Roturua after Auckland but then a little unsure. Are the distances between places in…

Why did we only book 3 weeks in NZ!!!!!!!
We are hiring a car and have booked- Hanmer Springs, Punkaika, Fox & Wanaka accommodations

We think we will then go onto Te Anau for a couple of days ( Realistically can we do Wanaka - Te Anau in one day with a break in Queenstown?)

Originally we thought we would then go back to Christchurch, (Akoroa?) Kaikora - ferry- Wellington Rotorua and Auckland. However we are now thinking of flying between Dunedin and Rotorua so we can spend more time in N Island.

If…

In planning a 3 week driving trip around the South Island, we (two people and a couple of pieces of luggage) are looking to drive from Christchurch - Karamea - down the West Coast to Haast, down to Wanaka - Queentown - back to Christchurch, with side trips taking us to as many day-walks as we can fit in.

The question is, would a 1.3 litre Daihatsu Sirion or Hyundai Getz or similar get us around okay (especially through the mountainous areas), or should we be looking at travelling in something…

I've always been sceptical/self conscious/wary about 'meet the locals' experiences.

Are most Mauri tours and experiences handled well? Is it an opportunity to interact and understand a fascinating foreign culture with genuine people enthusiastic enough to display it? Or is it a humiliating and/or highly packaged show for tourists with little consideration for Mauri involvement and no passion demonstrated?

Discuss!

I don't know the first thing about the New Zealand rugby season, but am planning on being there in December and January and would like to catch a match. Can somebody enlighten me to when the normal season is and if there is a website where I can see the schedule? Thank you.

JOB IN AUCKLAND

hi, Iam travelling to NZ in Feb 2008 and I wonder how easy is to get a job there. I´ve got work permit and don´t actually have any preferable occupation, I wouldn´t mind working in a bar or in a supermarket. Is it also necessary to get tax number (or something like this) before I start looking for a job?

This was the dirtiest, most unfriendly and unhelpfull hostel we've been to in the last 5 months in NZ. Owner lied to us when he said he had work available when he didnt, and made no effort to help us find work. The kitchen was disgusting and full of flies (who must have loved the place!). We are now staying in Napier Prison Backpackers. They are really friendly here and its a nice place to stay. Hope this helps! and remember, stay away from Aqua lodge!
