I have a vacant little beach house on top of the hill the overlooks the wide open Tasman sea in Piha. The view is spectacular and the sunsets are divine.
Piha is a popular beach just an hour out of Auckland city on the rugged west coast. Great spot for surfing, bush walks and nice community vibe.

The house is a very old and honestly it comes with a few quirks. In fact, I'm looking to do a rebuild later in the year as I don't think it will last another season! I thought I'd put this out on…

Hi TTs

I'm planning to walk the Heaphy Track from Brown Hut to Kohaihai end in the 2014 summer season. Ideally want to start at Brown Hut early (ie before 1030h, which seems to be when the Heaphy Bus and Golden Bay coach get there) but do not want to spend the night before at Brown Hut (I understand Golden Bay coaches can get you to Brown Hut by 1850h for those who want to stay there overnight and get an early start next day).

As far as I can see the main trailhead transport from Nelson is…

Are the older New Zealand currency with a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II at right on obverse at every denomination and a different bird of some sort at reverse still legal tender in New Zealand? They are from the 70s & 80s. Nowadays they have a different currency design with different people (Sir Edmund Hillary on $5; Kate Sheppard on $10; an older Queen Elizabeth II on $20; Sir Apirana Ngta on $50; and Lord Earnest Rutherford of Nelson on the $100 note.). How about the older coins such as…

Hi,
I am trying to work out the best way to do the Tongariro crossing and where to stay in the short time I have there - so any help will be appreciate.
I arrive into Taupo on 9th February about 11.15am on the Intercity bus. Was planning to stay at the YHA in Taupo for 2 nights, until my next Intercity bus leaves on the 11th Feb at 16.10pm.
The things I want to do there are:
Huka Falls, Tongariro Alpine Crossing, Mt Ngauruhoe and Crater of the Moon.

Would it work to do:
09.02.14 Huka Falls in…

Hi,

I am travelling to New Zealand early next year.
I was planning to rent a car, and if I do not find good/cheap enough accomodations, I planned to go camping with tent.

Do you have any advise about tenting on North island?
Is there some places meant for that or can I go go anywhere?
Is it safe?

I made a huge mistake in some travel arrangements and have now found myself in dire need of accommodations after christmas through until after new years in Queenstown.

Whether I like it or not, I'll be arriving in Queenstown on Dec 27 and would like to stay until Jan 8 (9-10) if possible. A two week short term rental doesn't seem possible at this late time to book. All hostels, hotels, motels, b&b's are booked solid. Airbnb has nothing available during that time either. (well, there are, but…

Hey,

we'll be somewhere between Rotorua and Auckland and have no idea how to spend the Day.

Any ideas about what to do and where to go?

Hi All,

I have 3-4 days in Fiordland. I'm debating whether to cram in and do either Kepler or Routeburn, or to do just a day hike or 2 with a Milford Sound boat tour. Is it feasible to do both a Milford Sound tour and Kepler/Routeburn full track in 3 days?

The main issue is that the most sensical huts/campgrounds are booked on both those routes, so for Kepler I'd have to pack 9-10 hours of hiking for 2 days (using the NZ govt's estimates) as only Iris Burn/Brod Bay are available. For…
