Hi all!

I'm 25 and arriving in Auckland to start my 12 month working holiday visa in NZ on October 14th!

Which is great, but I have no idea where to head / where to find work this time of year.

I have only been to Queenstown before and LOVED it (I was there in December), I would head down there looking for work but 1) It's quite far 2) I'm hopefully going to be spending the winter there come June and 3) Will there be any work as its the end of the ski season?

I am thinking maybe head towards the Bay of Islands? I've heard Auckland is a little bit of a boring city, but I would happy to work there a few months (I think!?)

Anyone done / doing a WHV in NZ that could lend me some tips?!

Normally I teach English as a foreign language (TEFL / ESL) so I could do this in a city perhaps.

Also, what sort of travel / medical insurance should I take? I'm flying from Australia

Any advice would be greatly appreciated : )

Theres definitely some TEFL work around. I could ask my son where to look. He looked for jobs before going away last month to Sth Korea. But depends I guess on what qualifications you hold.
Other than that, trademe.co.nz is probably the main job search site.

I don't know about Auckland, but generally TEFL jobs are hard to get - and they don't usually want short-term . You need to be aware that almost everything education/office/admin closes down for around a month from mid-December so not a good time to look for work in a city.
OTH hospitality & harvest jobs are just starting to heat up. Remember that the aim of the WHV from NZ's pov is to fill short-term seasonal jobs not usually filled by locals.

Loads of work in Christchurch if you are willing to go there. Or maybe some seasonal fruit picking in Nelson/Tasman/Marlborough regions

seek.co.nz or trademe.co.nz are where you should start looking for work

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Yeah I understand the WHV is mainly geared up for agriculture, wondered if regular companies might consider a WHVer though? I worked as TEFL teacher for several months in Australia on a WHV, no problems, but I imagine it's tougher in NZ.

Also toying with the idea of learning to surf this summer. Could I head to a surfing town and try and find a hospo job do you think? I've done bar work before.

The WHV in NZ isnt geared so much towards agricultural work as Australia. Its more than possible to get ordinary jobs on a WHV. You could consider somewhere like Tauranga as its close to surf beaches plus there are several English Language Schools and the possibility of hospitality work over summer.

Thanks very much, I will look into that.

Hi guys,

Related to Catrin's questions re WHV, what sort of work is generally available in Christchurch? #3 mentions there is loads there? I have background in the waste/recycling industry, also done bar work/waitressing etc in the past. Not currently looking as going to travel for a bit first but really keen to head to Christchurch so it'd be good to know what sort of stuff is around there?

THanks
Bethen.
