my husband and i made a very last minute decision to go to NZ at the end of this year... yes, a busy time of year...

we can leave on Dec 21 and return around the 2nd or 3rd of Jan and want to get in a fly fishing trip- say 3 days and also a trek of about 4-5 days.

Given the time of year- which trek would you recommend as being the best one to do? we'd prefer to avoid enormous numbers of people if possible. and also if we started a trek on the 22 or 23rd of Dec would be we able to get out of the park on a public holiday...Xmas day and boxing day?

are there any fly fishing operators you would recommend? i saw these people online http://www.fishinginnewzealand.com/ and was wondering if they were any good?

ideally we would be fishing and trekking on the same island to avoid wasting too much time in transit...

any help- especially with trek recommendation would be much appreciated!!!

Some great treks in NZ but not so many start & finish at the same point. Ones that do are Gillespie Pass and the Kepler. Ones that don't are the Heaphy, the Routeburn, Queen Charlotte Track the Abel Tasman, kand of course the Milford Track. (All the above are on the South Island) What about checking them out on line perhaps, as there's quite a different degree of difficulty and very different environs.

Have a look at www.doc.govt.nz - the department of conservation. The 'great walks' are good but will be busy at that time of year and you will need to book the huts as it is the 'great walks season'. Lots of fantastic trekking (or tramping as it's called here) everywhere in NZ. The kepler track is great - it starts and finishes in Te Anau. Deepends what kind of walk you're after. The hut system is really good here and NZ is well set up for multi-day tramps.

If you Google fly fishing te anau you get plenty of links, to combine the fishing with walking the Kepler or nearby ones. If you do pick Te Anau as a base, then you really must try and secure whatever accommodation is possible for your time - it is peak.
