Hi I'v read all the threads and still can't find a few answers. Just 2 questions:
I'm travelling on my own at 24 and don't really need to work for a few months, just want to travel as I like but meet people on the way. I'm in auckland, freezing my a*s off and probably move to the Bay of Islands. I will be moving into a hostel on Monday and will need to start booking buses. After reading all the threads, there is the Magic Bus, the Flexi-Pass and a few others. I'm not a big party person but still want to have a good time and meet people. Which bus would be more suited? I have 9 months in this country and have all the time I want.
Other questions: do internet cafe's have Sype.. It would be so much cheaper..

I would really appreciate your opinions.

Thanks

Emma

If you can, head to KohuKohu on the North Hokianga and check out The Tree House, a backpackers hostel. There's no public transport to their place but they'll pick you up from the ferry.
Tree House

Hi Emma. I went to NZ by myself for about 3 months and ended up doing hiking tours all over. The only ones I found that were reasonably backpacker friendly were with Hiking New Zealand. You can get all over the country, or just do one for 2/4/6/10 days. have fun.

It's not that cold here at the mo, granted it has got colder since the thunderstorms the other day but even so... anyway i went on intercity (who have the flexi-pass) down to national park last week and there's no commentary or random information imparted, we only got talking because we ended up stranded in te awamutu waiting for a passenger who'd failed to get back on the bus back in te kuiti (long story) so as a lone traveller i'd not go with that option personally. I'm also not a massive party person, well not every night anyway and i'm booked on kiwi ex - admittedly i only did northland on it so far and i stayed in a bbh hostel but my like minded friends have survived kiwi-ex, however, if you're really put off by their reputation and prices (as i was initially) then i'd go with magic, and if you end up staying somewhere a long time you meet other long termers, make friends and go out and have fun anyway!!

I didn't see a Skype phone at the S. Island backpacker places, but maybe up north. But you can get some pretty cheap phone cards, which may include where you want to call.

Magic Bus sounds like it could be your scene. Generally friendly crowd, good hostels and locations, and good fun socially without the manic partying levels of the Kiwi Experience crowd.
