Greetings,
My wife and I are looking at flying into Auckland from SFO on Dec 27 2007, and returning on Jan 30, 2008. We are in our mid 50's, experianced travellers and very active. We would like to see as much of the the country as possible, and are considering renting a camper van for transportation and housing rather than a rental car and using hotels.
Suggestions? Comments?
Thanks,
Firefly

Good idea. It will be the long summer school holidays so be prepared for campsites that may be fully booked. Some areas allow free camping - but its not as common as it used to be.
One of our questions is "it is better to reserve a vehicle before we leave, or shop around once we arrive"? What vendors are recommended for a van for two persons?
It is our experiance that often online reservations are more expensive than getting there and sniffing around.
Thanks,
Firefly
You'll be hitting there in peak season, so I'd reserve in advance. I used to go there a lot over Xmas, New Yrs. I'd always rent a car in advance, about now.
Maui Campervans is very well-known, but I ran into a LOT of people there who were dissatisfied with them after renting a van or camper. I'd check out one of the other places.
You should be able to get a good monthly rate.
Some cities, like Christchurch, are actually pretty empty over Xmas/NYE, as most locals head to the mountains or lakes or beaches. If you want to splurge, you might stay at a nice place like Rydges for half-price during that period.

Hi
I'm looking at doing something similar and have found a good company http://www.campervans.co.nz/.

You can give me some advice now, how much do you think petrol would cost for about 25 days touring around in a station wagon. say about 80 miles per day, about 2000 miles in total???
