Jetstar will take you to Singapore for about $220. But you have to inspect it ... the $107 or the $220 might not include any checked luggage, etc.

The Auckland to Avalon is 2 flights, the Tullamarine direct. Jetstar are budget and charge for everything extra.

can anyone tell me the pro and cons of booking a self drive holiday via website/agency vs me doing all the research and just booking a car at the airport and going?

Booking it just takes all the effort (but also personalization) out of the equation. Depends on how much you value your autonomy and making decisions about your experience vs. the time it takes to do so.
