We've delayed booking a campervan for our upcoming February trip to NZ, and are having a very difficult time finding a 2 berth self contained campervan in either Auckland or Christchurch for a ~2-week trip. We've made more than a dozen inquiries, and we've only found 1 and it was $331/day. Cheaper, non-self contained campers are available, and super-expensive 4-6 berth campers, but just the 1 2-berth self contained.

While searching, we have come across several companies that offer relocation specials, mostly from Christchurch to Auckland.

It appears they post the relocations a week or 2 before the campers need to be relocated, with most of the companies only allowing 8-10 days to get the vehicle to Aukland.

Anyway, we're thinking of just showing up in Christchurch around the 5th of February, and hoping that we can find a 2 berth camper at a "normal" price, or better, a relocation special.

Was wondering if anyone had some insight into the odds of us finding something in Christchurch that would fit our needs.

Thanks.

as you note relocations usually have time limits, they may not let you meander about for two weeks.

car and quiet hostels usually works out cheaper or the same cost.

you have only a short time for new zealand and therefore are quite unflexible. do you really want to spend a day or two (out of your 2 weeks in nz) trying to find a campervan that suits your requirements and is not too expensive (and probably failling to do so) ?

yep, you should have booked the camper earlier :-).
i would either rent a normal car and stay in hostels and guesthouses. or rent a campervan without toilet. not being self contained means not being able to stay "on the wild" of course.

8 days is more than adequate for a relocation from Christchurch to Auckland. Companies want to get their vehicles back to base as soon as practical rather than have them all sitting at the other end of the country.

Your idea is nuts! Feb is peak tourist season, esp for couples without kids, so it is most unlikely that a campervan will suddenly become available. Book a car for at least the first weekto go south of Chch and then see if you can get a relocation - most that I see only allow 3-5 days & never when I want one.

Hey! My name is Jay and i am from germany. Am on holidays here and just finished my tobacco. As its extremely expensive here i am looking for someone who can bring me some tobacco from the duty free shop. Of course i will pay for the tobacco and also pick you up from auckland auirport and drive you to your destination. Let me know if this sounds good to you!
Cheers, Jay
