We are coming to New Zeland at the end of July! Does anyone have reading suggestions - New Zealand-related? Fiction, historical-fiction, history stuff - doesn't matter, I like it all!
Thanks -

Mesano, you may find your answer on a post by greenroome back on 27 May this year.
Sorry, I would include the hyperlink if I knew how to!

Barry Crump has a few good ones.... Alan Duff's 'Once were Warriors' is probably best avoided.

If you do read "Once were warriors" read the sequels "What becomes of the broken hearted" and "Jakes long shadow" to not have quite such a low opinion of the human race.

For historical fiction I would suggest books by Jenny Pattrick and Debra Challinor. Jenny has written two great books based on coal mining on the South Island West Coast. They are Denniston Rose and Heart of Coal. Debra has done a number of books, but I really enjoyed a series of four books she wrote, beginning with an immigrant girl arriving in Auckland last century. Tamar was the name of one of those books.Time To Smell The Roses is a great non fiction book based in Ophir, Central Otago, written by Lois Galer. For an outdoorsy perspective, Lonely Planet published a book which was an account of a tourists tramping holiday in NZ. I thought it was a great read - and a pretty accurate portrayal of how it is. Good luck.
your son might enjoy books by nz writers such as tessa duder, joy cowley, jack lasenby, margaret mahy and maurice gee.
i can't recomend any particular titles but if you come across 'whitcoulls' on your travels, head for the children's section........though new books are expensive in nz, you might have luck in second hand book shops too.
