I am flying to Auckland and want to visit some places in the North Island before going South. Can you help me with the order of the itinerary so I don't backtrack too much?

  • Auckland
  • Waitomo Caves
  • Rotorua
  • Lake Waikaremoana (do Great Walk)
  • Tongariro (do Northen Circuit Great Walk)
  • Wellington

Ideally I would prefer not to do both treks straight after the other but, by looking at the map, it looks like it is the easier way. Any other suggestions for places to visit are more than appreciated. I want to spend 2-3 weeks in the North Island and the rest (4-5 weeks) in the South. I am interested in nature, wildlife and tramping (own tent).

Thank you :-)

You could put Rotorua/Taupo between your walks. They're all generally close together so it's not much backtracking, and you have plenty of time with 2-3 weeks.

You should add the Coromandel Peninsula. You could also consider heading north from Auckland for the Bay of Islands and such. Depends in part on how you plan to get around (bus, car) exactly how much you can reasonably fit in. With your interests you will find the South Island more rewarding overall, so lean toward 5 weeks there and 2 in the north.

Thanks tch7. Bay of Islands is a bit out of the way. Do you think I will have enough time in 2 weeks to do all of that. Considering that each trek takes about 4 days and that I will be travelling by bus.
