We are planning to be in Auckland for New Years Eve 2014. Where is the best place to see the New Year in with views of the fireworks etc? Do you need to get tickets to get into places, if so, how do you get them in advance and any indication of costs? Also best bars etc ? Any advice would be gratefully accepted.

Anywhere, along Aucklands waterfront is good. The closer to the bridge the better. No tickets required I believe.

Hard to sell tickets for a road that has residential properties along its length. And for something that can be seen for miles at any rate.

Post #1: Not sure why you would want to be close to the bridge for New Years' when the fireworks come off of the Sky Tower...?

OP: A lot of people like to go up to Auckland Domain near the Museum. A view of the Sky Tower is good, a bit back from it (aka not on the road directly underneath). If you can get up high (like the Domain) then that's even better.
Central Auckland is busy on New Years' eve, and some bars might have a cover charge to get in. Your idea of a good place depends if you want a 'nightclub' type experience, or a bar. Ponsonby is a good bar area, and you can see the Sky Tower there too. Vantage points in the city do fill with other people, so keep that in mind.
You would only need a ticket for a special event, eg a concert at the Waterfront or such.
