I'm currently road tripping across South Island for the next 1.5 months and as the trip was sort of spontaneous, I didn't get a chance to reserve a spot on the Milford Track. As the next available booking is in April, I was considering trying the track in the next couple of days while it's still in the off season.

Basically, I'm just trying to decide whether it's "worth it" or not. I have a lot of experience hiking and generally stick to alpine hiking as I find that the most enjoyable. I've got the Routeburn, Kepler, and Tongariro Circuit walks booked and those look absolutely fantastic.

I'm currently in Christchurch so would have to go out of my way on a straight ~10 hour drive to the start of the Milford Track. The weather report seems a bit iffy, and I'm just worried that if it rains, a lot of the rivers will become impassable. On the other hand, I could take it easy and do some day hikes in Arthur's Pass NP (Avalanche Peak looked particularly good).

I know the Milford Track is supposed to be the finest walk in the world, and I've read rave reviews of it, but I'm just not sure if it will be worth spending money on transport to the trail and back from Milford Sound if it turns out parts of the trail are impassable.

Any advice? Has anyone done the Milford Track recently and can comment? Particularly, should I be worried about the river crossings? I know obviously not to cross them in the rain and if it looks even remotely dangerous, but I'm not really sure what to expect otherwise.

Don't even think about it. Most of the bridges are removed because of avalanche danger.

Weather at the moment is very fickle so could be hit and miss at any rate. If parts are impassable then I think in the interest of public safety, the track would be closed. Off season is very dependent on weather conditions. The last thing they'd want would be expensive evacuations by helicopter.
