Hi everyone !

I'm looking for shoppings tips in Auckland (i don't want to spend too much time there looking for bargains...).

Basically I need
- second hand clothes
- new, affordable and good quality hiking boots.

If possible in the city center, otherwise I'll find a way...

Any ideas ?

Thanks a lot !

Hey CarolineA

I found that for second hand clothes there are loads of secondhand shops i.e. Salvation Army etc that sells clothing, shoes etc at really low low prices. I've done quite a bit of farming and orchard work around the world and I used to search these places out and buy work clothes from there!
In Auckland there should be loads of these shops.

Good Luck

You could try Number 1 shoes for new boots. The Albany branch had quite good quality boots (although propbably won't last a lifetime!) about a fortnight ago. Under $100.00.

For boots in Auckland Central try
Number1Shoes - Atrium on Elliott Mall, Elliott Street - www.no1shoes.co.nz
Kathmandu - Queen Street or Victoria Street West - www.kathmandu.co.nz

You will probably find a trade off between good and affordable. Kathmandu will sort you out for good, no1shoes will sort you out for affordable (cheap).

Second hand clothes you could go to the Salvation Army (Queen Street, opposite Aotea Square) or K (Karangahape) Road has the Paper Bag Princess and a number of stores between Queen Street and including St Kevins Arcade for something a little more interesting. However the stores on K Road are starting to get into boutique retro and become more pricey as the area is further developed and the rents go up. So although it is still cheap not everything there is cheap. The Warehouse (Downtown shopping centre, opposite Britomart transport centre) has cheap new clothes.

Outside of Auckland Central there is Dressmart in Onehunga, which is a basically an enclosed outlet mall. Also the clothing stores in the Onehunga's main street, including The Paper Bag Princess (same business, this is now the bigger store). No train line (as yet) but fairly easy to get a bus if you want to make the journey and can afford the time (30 -45 minutes?). It's also a nice contrast to downtown Auckland and a bit more "real" Auckland.

for bargin kathmandu, catch a train on the western line from britomart to henderson.

all in walking distance of train station is westcity mall and corbans art centre, plus parks and interesting riverside walks to pubs and cafes as well as shopping area with big name stores including kathmandu!

I'd head to the Warehouse first. Things are very cheap, and you can find something easily that will fit. If you don;t find decent boots, then check the other places.

If you haven't already left, I would recommend packing your hiking boots rather than buying new when you get there. Breaking in new boots when you are trying to enjoy your vacation is a dismal prospect, especially cheap boots.
