Good place for New Years

Hi,

I'm looking for any advice on places near Wellington for New Year's that would be the poor man's version of going to Nelson or Golden Bay (ferry prices are huge at that time)

any ideas????
Not looking for anywhere fancy, just good beach/bay/camping place?
