Buses north from ChCh, evening....none?

<The only city I know that uses the airport code commonly as shorthand for the city is Portland Oregon >
What about AKL, WLG, SYD etc....?
I know that some airport codes are clearly identified by any frequent travellers as being specific airports, not the city - eg LAX, LHR, CDG or JFK etc.
What confuses me more is when people make-up their own abbreviations for a city like AUK!!

I don't think any one of those three are commonly referred to by their airport code, whereas Portland Oregon is called PDX in conversation and casual writing (perhaps to distinguish .from the equally well-known Portland Maine).
