Hi All.
Am currently in Christchurch wanting to sell my car. It doesn't look like there are many buyers here - the car fair at the racecourse is quite depressing really and cars on trademe don't seem to be attracting any interest. (though I haven't put my car on trademe yet). I've been wondering if I should head north to Auckland and try there.....

But the boat is $185, then petrol, food & hostel, and then I can't seem to find a cheap flight out out auckland to sydney??!! Jetstar fly from Christchurch.... So maybe $600-$700 to get to auckland? Then $350 for a flight instead of $200.... or am I way off in these prices...??

So.... what do I do...
1. Hang around CC in hope that more people want cars soon (I suppose that means backpackers, but I guess most of them arrive and buy in Auckland). Accomodation will be minimal expense here as I have friends here.
2. Give the car away for a ridiculously low amount.... though I'm not sure to whom as the problem seems to be no buyers nevermind the price!
3. Drive to Auckland and hope someone is buying up there?

If anyone is interested the car is a mitsubishi rvr sportsgear, 4 wheel drive, manual, petrol, 167000km, current WOF & REG (valid till end of Jan start Feb), includes snowchains (yes I know its summer), oh and its green/silver.

Ta for any help in making this decision.

I'd say bite the bullet with trademe - pay the listing fee and see how you get on with trying to sell in Christchurch. If you have some time up your sleeve, you can reduce your reserve over time. Summer is about to hit and with that the idea of holiday vehicles and yours sounds like it might be of interest. I think you can change location, so you can see if there are any nibbles from Auckland before driving up, but even if there are more buyers up there, there are also truckloads more cars! Good luck.

I've been thinking about trademe, but the reason I haven't listed on it is that there are a number of same make/model cars on it and they aren't getting any bids..... Just thinking that all I'm doing is adding another car to the list..... My car isn't any better or different to them. What do you think?

I have time, just getting abit bored sitting around trying not to leave the house cause then I spend money grin

Damn. Wasn't supposed to be this difficult. Then again maybe I am just completely useless at the car selling business laugh
Ta for your reply.

Not wanting to buy, but what year is it and what price are you looking at??

Its 1994. I'd really like $3000 but of course this is very negotiable. Dealers will give me $1500. Actually one of the dealers at the car market said he has one on his lot and they had it for $2000 but people then asked what was wrong with it that it was so cheap so I think you can't win! $3000 seems to be the price that this sort of car is expected to be labelled as from what I can see. Or what do you think?

But there's just now interest ... no one looking nevermind asking about price :-(

sigh I know. Thats why I don't see the point in losing $29 plus possibly $39 for an eventual withdrawal .... or am I being seriously stupid? Wandered round to the backpacker's market on Battersea. Didn't seem to be anyone looking for a car there either. It's $69 to let your car sit for 3 days!

Have car just sitting out on road with for sale signs on it - nearly Hagley park. Flyers up in the hostels round town, must remember to relist in 'buy sell & exchange'. Can go to the car market on sunday again (week 4!!)

Is there really something else I should be doing? How do you get people interested in a car?

All I seem to be doing now is sitting around and its making me feel like I'm not trying to sell the car!

Do you really think selling will become easier....ie, people will start to look for cars / more backpackers?
I reckon going to Auckland will cost $450. Flights out probably the same as from CC if I book through a shop which I'll need to do to spend the dollars I get (hopefully) from the car. But I don't have any car insurance now...its run out. I know I don't need it but it's when you don't have it you have an accident. Though it was only 3rd party. A couple of friends have said they don't think it would be any easier to sell in Auckland - possibly more buyers but then more cars too....I dunno. Need to know someone in a hostel in A to see what they say! but I don't.

If I could figure out how to cover my food costs and I'm moving into a hostel (don't ask) so I'll have accomodation costs to cover, then I could happily (????) sit around. Maybe if I say I'll cook for everyone if they buy the food and include me then don't leave the hostel....that would be fun.

Sorry for the whining, I just don't know if I'm wasting time or if I'm doing all I can do..!

Dum de dum de dum.....

(Thanks for your replies. I appreciate it.)

One other thought is you could trot it down to Turners and see what they can get for it - put a reserve on it that won't make you cry if that is all you get and see what happens. There might even be other car auction sites in Christchurch. In the old days before trademe, we all used trade and exchange to sell vehicles - they're still going and you can list online for free, but there just aren't as many people using it these days.

Another thought is that if you're going to Sydney, then Auckland does have cheap options, such as Aerolinas Argentina (I think you can buy a one way ticket - they're often sitting at around $300 return, trying to make up for all the passengers from South America who get off in Auckland. Itchytravel seem to be a good source of info.

Sweet. Thanks. I guess it is just a sitting around game. Hmm. Been thinking about Turners...though as you mention the fees are quite expensive considering how much the car is worth...

Thing with the flight is that jetstar fly from CC so around $200/$230 to sydney. But I'm hoping to go to either S.Korea or Japan (ok the plan was to fly to S.Korea from Sydney but I don't think I will have the money now to do both korea & japan). So possibly cheaper if I bought a ticket NZ - Sydney - Seoul. Simply cause i should have cash in hand that I need to spend, otherwise I'd be buying online. I don't have a NZ bankaccount or credit card.

i suppose I could just convert NZ$ to whatever other currency I'll need and buy online...will need to keep my eye on the exchange rates - it is improving for NZ$ (my money is sterling so I get good exchange rates for pretty much any country though the NZ$ is starting to make things expensive again!)

Right, time to wander off and write my memoirs or something! grin

If Turners in Christchurch are anything like in Auckland, they've plenty of cars that dont even get a bid let alone meet the reserve. Its really quite difficult for anyone to sell a car these days especially if they're nit trading in.
